"I belong to another rider group of which I joined earlier, I won't mention the name. The people are nice, but they don't do anything that is interesting. I talked to Ralph and Cathy Saylor about the problem as I saw it. They invited me to come to a gathering for Chapter N. We were treated so nicely by everyone that it was like we were at our own family reunion. Keith and Kathleen Eddy are wonderful Director's. Each of the staff takes their areas of responsibility very seriously, and the meetings are uplifting. My wife wants to be part of GWRRA now!"

From the desk of the REGION "E" MAD

As we head into the riding season, Nancy and I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable riding year. We look forward to meeting many new faces at upcoming District, Regional events and of course, Wing Ding. Keep in mind May is motorcycle awareness month. Please be a part of our M.A.D. team, and help make our riding enjoyment safer for everyone.

A big thank you to Toney Buzick, The Illinois District Motorist Awareness Coordinator. Due to Toney's efforts, I was invited to attend a meeting of the Illinois Motorcycle Safety Council, which was held at the Illinois Department of Transportation Office in Springfield, IL on April 15th. The council's board is comprised of representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation (Division of Traffic Safety), Secretary of State's Office, Illinois State Police, A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois, A.M.A., G.W.R.R.A., Illinois Motorcycle Rider Program, H.O.G. and State Farm Insurance. The representatives of this board are dedicated to making Illinois highways safer for motorcyclists. The Illinois Department of Transportation has developed a "Comprehensive Strategic Motorcycle Safety Plan." The Advisory Council Board's main focus will target: Rider Education, Motorist Awareness, and Enforcement.

Nancy & I feel this was a great opportunity to have Regional representation at this meeting. I came away from this meeting with new insight and ideas from a team of experts, which may later be incorporated into other Districts in our Region.

I was provided the opportunity to address the board about a plan Nancy and I have been working on for some time. This plan involves a revision of the state's driver's education curriculum for driver's education students. This revision includes a twenty to thirty minute block of instruction in the area of motorcycle awareness. In addition, the plan calls for a series of questions, geared to motorist awareness, be added to the state's driver's license examination. This would provide motorist awareness education to every pre-driver in the state and would require at least some knowledge about motorcycles to obtain a driver's license. I feel my presentation was received by the board overall as an interesting concept and with some enthusiasm. We can only hope some day this will become reality and possibly filter out to other state's in the Region. Only time will tell.

GWRRA M.A.D is working to make riding safer for all. Join our team, Make-A-Difference!
