National Cycle - 75th Anniversary!

Maywood, IL – November 2011 – The measure of any company is the extent to which they’ve influenced and impacted their industry and their customers. In the world of motorcycling, National Cycle Inc. has been at the forefront of motorcycle accessory innovation for 75 years.

This innovative spirit began in 1937 when Gordon Willey, a passionate aviator, quit a secure job with Railway Express Agency and built a motorcycle accessory start-up venture in the depths of the Great Depression. With creativity, inventiveness and perseverance, he developed new designs and patents in rearview mirrors, fender tips, saddlebags and, motorcycle windshields. Gordon’s business, known then as The Nation’s Cycle Center, evolved and successfully grew into today’s National Cycle, where that same pioneering spirit introduced the motorcycle industry to polycarbonate windshields, windshield hardcoating, quick release windshields and accessories, metric cruiser accessories, scooter windshields, and their well known aeroacoustic VStream® windscreen designs.

Now the world’s leading motorcycle windshield manufacturer, National Cycle celebrates 2012 under the ownership of the second generation of the Willey family. It’s rare for a company to survive that long in a highly competitive marketplace. This strength and success is determined not only by the products they make and the customer loyalty they’ve earned, but by their contribution to the advancement of design and manufacturing technology that shapes today’s product categories and influences modern motorcycle design.

One of the first contributions was the patented cone-back mirror that still shapes how motorcycle rear view mirrors are made today. Their advances in formable, hardcoated polycarbonate windshields influenced every OEM manufacturer in the world. National Cycle’s early application of traditional styled windshields to such bikes as the Yamaha Virago was the beginning of the modern metric cruiser accessory market. And now their VStream windscreens are changing the way the industry thinks about the entire concept of motorcycle windshields. For 75 years, National Cycle innovated and invented accessories and pioneered materials that have permanently found their way to the drawing boards of motorcycle designers everywhere.

National Cycle’s owners and dedicated employees are motorcycle enthusiasts. Motorcycles are the company’s DNA. The planet is their testing grounds. They measure the value and result of each product by how it enhances the owner’s riding experience and on-road confidence. Satisfied customers are the testament to National Cycle’s 75 years of success. These customers are the reason National Cycle exists, and for whom the worldwide leader in motorcycle accessory innovation will continue to produce great products for the next 75 years.
